Our prophesied savior, Christ, was born to us through the union of Joseph and Mary. In the first book of the New Testament Christ gets baptized and starts teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath day! He begins giving us instructions on how to live by the Word of God. The one most intriguing lesson Christ gives us is from Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I come not to destroy but to fulfill.” Christ wasn’t only talking about the first ten commandments. Christ wants us to keep as much of the Law of Moses as possible. Though it is not a popular topic among them. Everyone seeking Christ must strive to understand the Old Letter.
Throughout scripture we see that the prophets made great emphasis on keeping the law. They wrote about the atrocities that fell upon the Israelites for breaking the law. And we even see that the law was broken on purpose Judges, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Kings. It is evident that the law was possible to keep before Christ but a majority of Israel chose not to keep the law. Unfortunately, we are dealing with this still today, a lawless people perpetuating themselves as righteous, have infiltrated modern Churches. In this article I will emphasize the need for Christians to at least attempt keeping the law of Moses though scripture.
The Law of Moses and The Highest God.
First and foremost, before we get into the law of Moses, know that it is not his law. The Highest God chose Moses for the purpose of mediating his rules. He also taught the Israelites the meanings of the Law that he received from The Highest God. Moses did not come up with the law by himself. However, he did try to explain the law in a way that was acceptable to The Highest God. Moses didn’t make any significant changes but just know that he did not write it for himself.
Exodus 19: 18-20
18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
20 And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
This is the first instance that The Highest God appeared unto Israel. Except Moses was the only one holy enough to communicate with him. As you can see from the verses above Moses is being obedient to The Highest God’s will. He is a glorified mediator between The Highest God and the regular people. With a fiery presence like that, I don’t think anyone would be brave enough to go against The Highest God.
The Law of Moses is The Highest Gods Law
All of the commandments Moses attained came from The Highest God. Exodus 24:12 “ And the Lord said unto Moses, come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.” Therefore, God ordained and wrote what we call today the Law of Moses. The good and the “bad” parts of the law are all originating from The Highest God. If we are afraid to read and accept His law, that may mean that we are afraid of him. At some point in our Christian lives, we have to bear down mentally and face the reality of our actions. It is better that we read and understand how to correct ourselves according to his word than to continue in sin and die.
Deuteronomy 27:26 “Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.” Most Christians only focus on the first 10 commandments and refuse to at least try to keep the other 600. Christ ordained all of them, not just 10. Though the first ten are great to keep, the rest of the commandments emphasize those initial few. Which is why it is beneficial for Christians to review their understanding of the entire Law.
Joshua 22:5 “But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
The Law of Moses and Christ.
Christ placed emphasis on keeping the Law and believing in it. The Law had prophesied Christ therefore it is for Christ not against him. There are a lot of scriptures in the New Testament that Christ quotes from the Old Testament. John 5:46-47 “46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
Christ is explaining that he and Moses are giving the same Law from The Highest God. And Moses prophesied him within the Law, therefore stating that if we refuse Moses, we are also refusing Christ.
Deuteronomy 18: 15-19
15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17 And the Lord said unto me, they have well-spoken that which they have spoken.
18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
Interpretation of Scripture.
As you can see Moses is speaking about a new prophet that will be born from Israel who will be like himself, having the word of The Highest God. This prophet will come because they didn’t want to see God’s fiery presence anymore. In their defense, hearing a powerful voice come out of a blazing fire reaching to Heaven is pretty intimidating. They wanted someone easier to approach than fire so that they didn’t die from his glory. Although they asked for this, the prophet will still have the same message that Moses gave. Again, we see that anyone who doesn’t listen to the “Newer Moses”, who is Christ, will be punished.
As Christians reading the New Testament, we have to understand that Christ’s teachings didn’t originate from himself either. They are slightly reconstructed teachings from Moses which came directly from The Highest God. Both Moses and Christ came to us for the same purpose, to give a Law unto Israel and the world that will either save us or curse us. Whether we are saved or cursed depends on how well we understand and keep their laws John 7:28.
Peace in The The Law.
Although we see a lot of punishments in the Law given to Moses, the majority of the Law is peaceful. It is designed to help us live a happier life. The Law is intimidating to us because it seems unforgiving, brutal and strict. People believe that The Highest God changed from the old covenant to the new covenant. He did not change Malachi 3:6-7. He evolved his old law into a more spiritual one Ezekiel 36: 24-27. Before everything was physical, things we could see; but now all things are invisible things we have to seek inward 1 Corinthians 2:12-14.
Psalm 119: 18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
V. 174 “I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord, and thy law is my delight.
I suggest reading all of Psalm 119 because all it talks about is the delight of The Most Highs Law. There are portions of the law that speak of giving food to the poor, sharing with the neighbor, forgiving the unlearned, and taking care of the widows. We see this in the New Testament as well but they came from the original Law. In general, the Law itself is meant to help us understand our sins and to correct ourselves according to The Word. Once we are able to do this, we can attain peace and salvation. Romans 7:7-12.
Proverbs 4:1-4 “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.”
Conclusion
.
God’s Law was given to Moses and clarified by Christ. Christ was prophesied by Moses to be a new and approachable form of The Highest God rather than another blaze of fire. Christ is ordained to guide us into the spiritual aspects of the original law given to Moses. Although the Law gives punishments for sin it also gives life, peace and eternal life to those who listen, understand and do them.
Christians ought to seek to understand the entire Law of The Highest God and not just the first 10. The rest of the Law is important and is referenced by Christ in the New Testament. In my next article I will put the Law of Moses and the teachings of Christ as one ultimate guide. I will put each portion of the law in reasonable sections and gradually explain how they evolved, how to keep them and what Laws we can’t keep today. Trust in the scriptures to give you a clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. I encourage you to embark on this life fulfilling teaching. Proverbs 28:9
